About

Macro Mamas was started in 1992, conceived in the hills of the Finger Lakes Region, where the first seeds were cast in the soils between Seneca and Cayuga Lakes. Our first market season started with a small offering of macrobiotically prepared foods, with most of the produce coming from our own gardens. As the business grew, we could no longer rely on our gardens alone, so we began purchasing much of produce from local and organic farms who embraced many of the same sustainable practices we did.

We are fortunately blessed with a wealth of organic farms in this area, allowing us to have an abundance of fresh produce to create delicious and vibrant dishes. The vegetable offerings are as varied as the soil types. These days we rely on our gardens for herbs, edible flowers, fruits and unique vegetables that occasionally grace the table.

When preparing dishes in our kitchen, we take into consideration the energetic quality of each season. Each dish reflects the strengths of that seasons offerings coupled with the playful spirit within the kitchen.

We feel that food which is grown and prepared with the season provides us with an enhanced immune system just as food that is grown organically or chemically free has an enhanced nutritional value, because a healthy soil matrix contains many more available nutrients. Plants grown this way contain more minerals, antioxidants, and vitamins for their own health, and for those of us who eat them.

Beyond the biochemical nature of nutrition there is also an energetic quality to food and an energetic quality to food preparation. We believe that the inherent energetic qualities of seasonally grown and consumed food promote the greatest health for our bodies. Eating and preparing this food is a way of supporting the interconnected structure within our community. Food that nourishes the body also nourishes the mind and the soul, making us caring adults who extend ourselves out into the community in a thoughtful and sharing way.

In the kitchen today, we are a group of women, all natural foods chefs, all gardeners, coming together to share our collective talents, with a lightness of heart, to create ever changing market menus. No menu is ever the same. Our plant based cuisine is a reflection of ideas inspired by natures offering in a co-creation with our playful spirits. Herbs and vegetables from our gardens, plants wildcrafted from the surrounding hillsides often make their way into the market dishes. We primarily use vegetables that are in season and locally grown, so that the dishes we prepare will impart its most vibrant nature on to you. The grains and beans we choose help prepare the body for the change in the season by warming it up or cooing it down.

We hope you will join us in this quest to nourish ourselves, our families, our communities, and our land.

Rice and beanly yours,
The macro mamas
